Chemical Peels Q & A

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that rejuvenates your appearance by removing old and blemished skin. Dr. Hicks places a chemical solution on your skin to exfoliate it’s surface or penetrate more deeply to remove several layers of skin. As fresh skin grows in, your complexion becomes brighter.

What skin conditions improve with chemical peels?

As your old skin peels away, imperfections disappear along with the skin. As a group, chemical peels improve problems such as:

  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Dry skin
  • Clogged pores
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Age spots, melasma, and other skin discolorations

The exact skin conditions treated depend on the type of peel you choose.

What are the different types of chemical peels?

The strength of the ingredients in your chemical peel determines the amount of skin removed. There are three general categories of peels. With each one, you’ll experience different cosmetic results and recovery times.

Light peel

A light peel gently exfoliates your skin’s outer layer. This type of peel alleviates dry skin, diminishes the appearance of fine lines, and improves blotchy skin. Light peels are gentle enough to repeat at regular intervals to maintain a glowing complexion. Most patients don’t need any downtime, but it takes your skin one to seven days to heal.

Medium peel

A medium peel removes the outer layer and the upper part of the middle layer of your skin. It produces the same results as a light peel plus it minimizes age spots, diminishes moderate wrinkles, improves texture, and treats uneven skin tone. A medium peel can also help smooth away acne scars. You’ll need about 7 days to fully heal after a medium peel.

Deep peel

A deep peel penetrates to the lowest layer of skin. Since it removes the most skin, it treats all skin conditions, including severe skin sun damage and deeper wrinkles and scars. While a deep peel reveals dramatic results, you’ll also need more time to recover. Everyone heals at a different pace, but most patients take 14-21 days.
